After one night in Budapest, Mattia and I took off to Athens, Greece. Our trip was mainly to help out their economy! (Just kidding, of course, but I hope our tourist spending did help a little.) It was constantly 100 degrees (38 in Celsius) and humid during our entire trip. Besides the heat, I loved everything about the city from the moment I exited the airport. It was one of the first times I had ever been somewhere so old, the history was palpable.
Every morning started with a freddo cappuccino. It was refreshing but overly sweet, a taste I got used to after the first day. The sweetness felt appropriate for the city. And after spending many hours exploring and hiking up to the Acropolis in the overbearing heat, we moved onto overly sweet iced lemonade. Mattia got addicted to those.
Despite their economic problems, the people were funny, their laughter came easily, and their food was amazing. I hope they sort out their debt and economic issues soon!
