My friends and I woke up early on a Saturday morning to explore the Broad Museum in Los Angeles back in January. I love contemporary art and was happy about this new cultural addition to LA.
I absolutely adored Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirrored Room of course, but my favorite piece was a massive painting of the Dolomites. The Italian artist had placed this painting of his hometown Murano on the floor of his studio so that people could step and spill on it. This resulted in an appearance of an antique photograph, similar to the ones that had inspired him growing up. I didn't even realize it was a painting until I got up close and read the description!
It's a beautiful art piece but the real reason it hit close to my heart was because the Dolomites are Mattia's hometown. I had been lucky enough to visit fairly often in the past year. It was pretty strange for another place to invoke homesickness while I was in my hometown. It was a completely unexpected find, but it felt instantly familiar and cozy.
I'm excited for future visits and new exhibits!
